Did you file your taxes on time but are still waiting for your return from the IRS?

According to the Wall Street Journal, The IRS ended the tax season with 35.3 million unprocessed tax returns. In 2018 they had four times less than that.

Less than half of the current backlog is paper tax returns that are waiting to be processed. A large number of returns were suspended, requiring further review, due to the differences between credits taxpayers claimed to have and what the IRS records indicate they qualify for.

Some filers also elected to use their 2019 earnings instead of 2020 to claim a larger earned income tax credit or additional child tax credit as allowed by the Cares Act. This was to hopefully help fund families quickly but has instead led to delays in tax returns leaving American families in a financial crunch.

Unfortunately, the only thing taxpayers can do is wait. With an Estimated 3.7 Million suspicious returns, and an additional 31.6 other returns to get to, the understaffed IRS will hopefully get to your tax return before 2022.
